P has what might be a new years resolution to get to church on Sundays. As a non-believer and someone who likes sweatpants Sundays, this isn't really my optimal activity. However, I find that if I go, there are perks. For example, I can say "P in 5 days Dan is having a party with a campfire and I'd like to go" and she'll say "ok. In six days I'm going to church will you come with me?" And I'll weigh this and conclude that we have a balanced trade and I'll accept.

Also, at these party type affairs I'll realize that my sense of humor has veered uncomfortably into lame dad territory. It's not uncomfortable for me, so much, as the people who are subjected to the jokes. Sorry dudes!

baby isn't supposed to watch tv until he's like 3, but somebody's got to babysit the sitter! So I build obfuscating forts for him to roll around in during these late season NFL contests. I find that I miss many big plays trying to get baby to have giggling fits or to clean the puke off his chin. And gladly. Plus building forts is a lesson a kid can't start learning early enough. It's essential.

Granny Turned 90. My folks threw her a party. There were some kids there and they were a little out of control. That kind of rough housing would not have flown when I was that age.

So I bought a new point and shoot camera. A real antique. It's a Ricoh FF1. So far, when the thing hits, it really hits. However, the auto-focus appears to be the drunkest piece of equipment I've ever tried using. It has a manual focus option, but it's basically like "guess the distance" and "guess if this works or not." However I did receive a nice compliment at the Apple store on it last night so booyeah. It's a pretty necklace if nothing else. Plus look at these colors/weird optical effects:

Here's one where the focus worked, and then below what is this? A tilt shift lens?

Seriously. I can't figure this out.

These forest pictures I should have had a tripod. One thing I'd like to do more of in the future is blurrier photos, from motion, but that would work better for pictures of people. The forest is a pretty still place. A "that one's on me" type deal.

Realized we haven't had any pictures of the dog lately. Hey dog! Thanks for waking the baby up from a 5 minute nap last night because someone was visiting downstairs. Good move you mutt. Otherwise you still tight.

This point and shoot camera has a hot shoe, which allows for an external flash to be attached, which is good fun for around the house. It also folds in on itself, and is about the size of a pack of 100 length cigarettes. If I can ever figure out how to use it we'll really be in business. About that time it'll probably disintegrate, but whatevs.

Everybody went down to Keizer to visit Gma and Gpa and so P could catch up on her TV programs that they TIVO for her. Playoff football is on and P is bogarting the big HDTV watching Kim and Kourtney take New York. Dad was tivoing the football games but watching those after the fact is like listening to a clean version of a rap song you love. I snuck into the guest bedroom and they heard me catching the last quarter of the 49er game. Whoowee that was a great game. They heard me because I am prone to holler at excellent television sporting achievements.

So dad and I played many games of cribbage for no stakes. Other than football there might be no better game. We had taco night which was delicious and then we drove home in the cold dark night. The dog came obviously and he always has a ball down there.

Scott and I went to a Blazer game a long time ago and I hollered so much there that my voice was toast for a few days. It was kind of embarrassing after the fact, but it was another great game, and you can't not holler for 4th quarter 3 pointers in a close game.

There are approximately two reasons I'd want a smart phone: 1) Hopefully it'd lock better than my current phone to cut back on pocket dialing, and 2) for an app like "take a picture of a leaf and the phone will tell you what kind of plant that is." I always wish I was more up on my trees. I believe this is a birch tree though. I know my oaks and fir trees, and can spot a Ponderosa pine from a mile away. I'm not so up on my other trees, or underbrush at all. I did receive a pretty bitchen bird feeder for Christmas, so maybe I'll get up on my birds. There have been some blue beauties in the neighborhood.

My favorite part about this town was the smoke coming out of so many chimneys. We also saw some meat hanging out (to dry? I guess you have to age meat), which Jake got a picture of but I kind of chickened out. I guess I shy away, sometimes, from taking pictures with a subject in the frame. I almost took a picture of a trailer in a parking lot there, and thought I did actually, but it maybe appears I didn't. We walked along the river and there were tons of dead salmon on the banks, huge fish rotting. All the locals were talking about how we had to get 2 miles up river where the bald eagles were pecking away at the spawners. They were trying to get us to leave maybe. Jake hates bald eagles so he wanted to go to take pictures that would slander the birds. I was more interested in some wild turkeys, but the bar didn't open till four. We'd be on the road by then, in search of sunset shots from another small town. I got five pictures in Wishram at dusk, and had a world-class one lined up when my camera froze. I hiked back to their restaurant and Jake and I ate some world-class small town cheeseburgers. He was gloveless and therefore may have been 2-3 deep by the time I got there. The Past Time Tavern there has some wonderful Christmas decorations. Pictures forthcoming.

it'll be a good exercise in letting go, esp. to almost worthless data in an age of omnipresent almost worthless data
