art and marketing




The Portland Acupuncture Project installed several huge needles around town at key points-- Kelly Pt Park, Mt Tabor, and others. I don't know how tongue in cheek they are being, but their stated goal is to improve the health of the city. My take is that it's a great marketing strategy-- raising awareness through public art. I tried being all out dubious for a while but the sculptures are really well done and mesmerizing, and even if the goal of increasing the city's health is corny as hell, I think it's at least a little neat.
